plan your perfect wedding in the mountains in 4 Quick Tips

1. location, location, location

First of all, if you’re considering a wedding in the mountains, chances are there’s a reason. Is it because you want to get away? Or is it because going to the mountains is like going home?

Regardless of your specific reason, think about what getting married in the mountains means to you and then choose your location accordingly. Do you want epic views or peaceful waterfalls? Do you want adventure or luxury?

I will say that after being at many mountain weddings over many years in a variety of settings, you can’t go wrong. It’s simply a matter of finding the perfect fit for you whether that’s a jagged peak or a calm lake. Close your eyes and visualize what the mountains mean to you.

Once you have an idea, then you can narrow down a venue. If you still need help, check out this post on where to get married in Colorado to help you narrow down your priorities. Then, check out some of our favorite Colorado wedding venues with mountain views.

2. pick the right season

Second, the mountains have a certain allure and it changes by the season. Are you looking for a winter wonderland or the delicate wildflowers of spring? Maybe your goal is to stand underneath changing Aspen leaves.

The season will matter because it will set the vibe, dictate the weather, and determine how comfortable things will be. There’s nothing wrong with a winter mountain wedding as long as you’re prepared to handle the cold. Certain seasons have more risk (thunderstorms) but also more rewards (rainbows.)

One thing I’ve learned is that anything that happens can add to the joy of the day if you let it. Maybe rain wasn’t your vision, but it can be a fun demonstration of the power of the mountains and the power of love.

One more season related factor might be crowds. Summertime might be an easier time for all of your friends and family to travel. However, it might be a more crowded time at your chosen location which might be a reason to consider a winter wedding in Colorado.

Unfortunately, if you’re set on a certain venue, that venue availability might dictate when you’re able to get married. Decide if you’re ok with that.

There are pros and cons to all the mountain seasons, take a minute to think through when you want to adventure into the rocky cliffs to say “I do!” Then pick a season.

3. plan for the variables

Now that you know the when and where, it’s time to plan for those unforeseen or at least unpredictable variables. Is it going to rain or snow? What’s your plan for that?

You might think about the weather, altitude, and general logistical challenges of getting your guests to your mountain wedding destination. The challenges are absolutely part of the fun, but it’s more fun if you are prepared. Other variables might include getting your marriage license and coordinating vendors.

4. remember your why

Lastly, if you’ve read any of my blog posts, I try to avoid trinkets and materialistic things in favor of love and beauty. As you plan your wedding and get swept away in all of the expenses and logistics, don’t forget your why. Chances are you’re not planning a wedding to have the perfect table settings, so when you start to get stressed you can simply remember that.

Remembering your why will help you keep focused on why you chose to have a wedding in the mountains. Check out our Less Common Tips for Getting Married in the Mountains if you need a reminder of what’s important. The short answer is love.
