Why Creativity is Important for Business and Life

Today, my hope is to remind you why creativity is important. I say remind you, because at some point in your life you knew. It might have been that fleeting moment yesterday when you had the best idea for a new dinner recipe or years ago when you took your first photo.

creativity comes from the heart

Creativity is important because it is how your unique heart communicates.

If you think about what creativity is, it’s all about producing something original from your imagination. The key element of that is you.

Each person with their unique set of experiences and skills has the ability to create something new. It might be some same old thing reimagined, but it’s also new.

For me, my most creative acts are when I am in the zone or tapped into a flow state. I am just writing, not searching for words. I’m am just shooting photos, not trying to shoot.

I am creating, not trying to create.

We get in our own way when we worry, stress, or let the ego convince us we aren’t creative. We get in the way of a new idea that is trying to burst out of us. You know the feeling.

You know the feeling of having something you want to say or do. Perhaps you don’t know why or where it came from, and that might just be the key. Creativity is about listening and acting, not trying to come up with the best idea.

obstacles to creativity

A quick look behind the scenes. Whenever I’m writing a blog post there is some behind the scenes work to be done. Sure, I pick my own topics but sometimes the titles are strategic.

I do some keyword research in order to see if there is a certain phrase that people are searching a lot. Interestingly, “creativity hashtags” is a popular search. This struck me as pretty funny.

My opinion of instagram is a little bit jaded. Even though I benefit from all things internet, I can’t help but be slightly unenthusiastic about the culture that it can create. On the one hand it is an amazing outlet for sharing our creations but on the other there is a game and a method which can actually stifle creativity.

For example, there is probably a much more creative title for this blog post than, “Why creativity is important.” But I’m not trying to be creative, I’m trying to be seen. The same is to be said for hashtag use.

We want to use whatever the best “creativity hashtags” are so that our work will be seen as creative. This, unfortunately, doesn’t actually help my creativity.

Brene Brown puts it so perfectly in her book The Gifts of Imperfection.

“Comparison is all about conformity and competition. At first it seems like conforming and competing are mutually exclusive, but they’re not. When we compare, we want to see who or what is the best out of a specific collection of “alike things.” … The comparison mandate becomes this crushing paradox of “fit in and stand out!” It’s not cultivate self-acceptance, belonging, and authenticity; it’s be just like everyone else but better.”

How can we be creative when we’re busy competing, cloning, commoditizing, conforming, and copying?

How can we shut out the noise and distractions in order to let the river of creativity flow? Is it even possible to not worry about fitting in?

Creativity, for me, feels like something I need to do much like eating or exercise. If I’m not creating I’m just moving through the world. Conversely when I am creating, I feel free and fulfilled.

What about you? How do you feel like creativity is important to you?
