Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon Photography

Today we’re sharing some Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon photography from our favorite hikes and lookouts around the parks. Sequoia is one of our favorite places on earth. And we love a lot of places on this beautiful earth.

There’s something magical about standing beneath a Giant Sequoia tree. We’ve photographed these giants countless times with varying results and still can’t get enough. Someone wrote me an email the other day reiterating my point perfectly.

“I keep telling him that the pictures don’t do it justice for how you feel when you’re standing under the giant sequoias.”

We’re excited to share some of our favorite photos from the years we’ve spent exploring the park. One of the things that we love about Sequoia and Kings Canyon is that the access is limited. The park is actually quite large compared to where most of the visitors are concentrated.

This means that every time we visit, there is something new to see and explore. There are so many places we haven’t been yet simply because they take a lot of effort to get to. So if the photos in this post are only a small percentage of what the parks have to offer, imagine what there is yet to discover!

pictures of sequoia trees “big trees”

Call them Giant Redwoods, Sierra Redwoods, Giant Sequoias, or Big Trees. These babies are huge and walking beneath them is a memorable experience. We always recommend taking a moment to stand in silence and simply be present.

If you haven’t seen it, check out the story behind the photo Nick Nichols took of a Redwood tree for National Geographic.

There are popular groves with names and notoriety as well as humble trees you come across by chance. But these Giants now only grow in the Sierras where the conditions are just right.

One of the things I love about the Giant Sequoias is that they actually benefit from fire. It seems to fit well with my idea of nature, adventure, type 2 fun, and growth. Hard work, heat, and effort often lead to something beautiful and pure.

It’s pretty cool to walk inside a Big Tree that has been hallowed from fire but still lives and grows over your head.

Explore accessible mountain views from Moro Rock, Beetle Rock, Hanging Rock, and Sunset Rock. Dive deeper into the National Park and discover the mountain views from the Watchtower, High Sierra Trail, and even Mt. Whitney.

If you like climbing mountains there’s everything from the iconic Mt. Whitney to more accessible options like Mitchell Peak. Some of our other favorites include Sawtooth Peak out of Mineral King and Alta Peak out of Giant Forest.

Don’t discount views of lush meadows such as Crescent and Halstead. Halstead Meadow recently underwent an amazing restoration project! It’s in these beautiful green playgrounds that we have often seen deers prancing and bears munching.

wildlife (bear cubs!) and wildflowers in sequoia

If you spend enough time in Sequoia you’ll probably meet some of the locals. There are deer that prance in the meadows and bear cubs that explore the forest. Marmots sit on logs swapping stories of crazy tourists.

Many of my favorite memories of Sequoia involve wildlife.

On a drive up Generals Highway we looked over to see two bear cubs tumbling down a wildflower covered hillside. One day our hike turned into a session watching two bear cubs play in the trees while their mom napped below. On another trip we watched a handful of deer chase each other around Big Meadow.

Sequoia is also an amazing place to explore wildflowers! The reason our hikes take so long is so that Marc can slow down and photograph all the amazing wildflowers. If you’re into that sort of thing, check out this Sierra Nevada Wildflower Field Guide.
