Lost Coast and Redwoods National Park | Northern California Adventure

One of the highlights of our summer was our road trip in northern California. We had a few amazing northern California weddings to shoot so we decided to take it on the road and enjoy a few places we had been wanting to explore. It also happened that we had sold our house in California in anticipation of our move to Colorado. It was a perfect time to move into our truck and try out life on the road. More about that in a minute. A big destination on the list was the Lost Coast. Ever since we hiked the West Coast Trail, one of our first big back-backing trips together back in 2008, we have had a love of hiking and camping on the beach. Instead of hiking the whole trail we ended up breaking the trip up into segments that would fit our timeframe. We started out spending some time camping in our truck on the beach at the southern end of the trail. It was like having a beach house, with no one else around, if your beach house fit in the back of your truck. We day hiked from there attempting to avoid the poison oak on the bluffs for the sake of some magnificent views. Next we did a little back-packing from shelter cove where my dreams of barefoot backpacking were dashed by the sharp rocks on the beach. The views made up for it as good views often do. After that we had a luxurious drive through the redwoods. Being lovers of Sequoia National Park, we thought that these coastal redwoods would have nothing on our Giants. Soon we were eating our words as we were caught spell-bound by the beauty and magnitude of the tree. Then we headed to the northern end of the Lost Coast  for some beach-front camping and a sunrise hike to a lighthouse. This agenda isn’t the only way to explore the Lost Coast and Redwoods National Park, however, it did seem to suit our needs well and made us question our decision to move away from the west coast. All good adventures do that, they make you think about how you are spending your time.

Sitting here writing this in our new home in Colorado makes me think fondly back to the adventures of the year and at the same time makes me grateful for the sense of home we now have. Which brings me to the next topic, I suppose it’s time to talk about truck camper life. It is a poetic life, living on the road waking up in new places to explore and experience. We made the camper as cozy as possible and stocked it with meals we loved. One of the main challenges was actually getting work done while living like that. For one, you’ll notice that while in the past I blogged adventures soon after they happened, this summer that was much more difficult. While we equiped our camper with a solar panel and goal zero battery to charge our lap-tops, it was enough to try to stay up with blogging our wedding and engagement work. The internet speed you get from a cell phone is not quite sufficient for uploading pictures and many of the places we went we didn’t have internet at all. We discovered some awesome coffee shops as well as some strange ones in which to set up our office for a few hours but it’s not quite the same as having a routine or schedule. Don’t get me wrong, our routine is far less structured than many since we have to shift it from week to week depending on what days we’re shooting, but routine was something we actually missed. I also missed having a shower and a bathroom especially considering these weeks were some of the worst of my morning sickness! If I’m honest though, the thing that makes it hard to work from the road is the distraction of the amazing views! Hope you enjoy some of our favorites!
