Colorado Backcountry Skiing Season Recap

This past winter was my (Marc) first full time winter season in Colorado. Brenda, having grown up near Denver, has seen many winters here but this was my first! Last season we were in Colorado most of the time and definitely got some amazing powder days, but I was excited to see the full transition from fall to winter and watch the snow accumulate in the Mountains! The Colorado Backcountry Skiing access is pretty amazing and I was glad to take advantage of living so close to some incredible locations!

From the time we decided to move here, I couldn’t wait to cozy up to the fire and watch the snow pile up outside our window. It was such a wonderful feeling to be toasty by wood stove watching the snow fly, pile up on the deck, in the trees, and turn our yard in to a winter wonderland. Evenings such as those were usually followed by an early morning alarm, loading the skis in the truck, and winding up a mountain road under cover of darkness. The true reward was experiencing the deep dry powder days of the rockies! Most of my ski buddies work normal hours so I’ve gotten accustomed to the dawn patrol! As a photographer, it works out perfectly since sunrise light is hard to beat! I didn’t get a huge number of days in the backcountry this season, but I savored every moment knowing that it might be a while before baby Skyla joins me in the Mountains!
