Blue Lake Colorado Hiking Adventure and Photography
What is spring? Does it begin on March 20th, the official first day of spring? Or is it when the wildflowers peak and the mountains are as breathtaking as they were on our Blue Lake Colorado hiking adventure?
Spring in Colorado means a lot of things. Today as I write this it means we just had a big snow storm that closed the schools and allowed us to ski out our back door. Later this summer, we’ll celebrate spring by hiking in the mountains hunting for alpine wildflowers.

Blue Lake was high on our long bucket list of hikes to do after moving our life and business back to Colorado. The lake is just as many dream an alpine lake should be, a stunning and vibrant blue. A blue that takes your breath, pain, blisters, and hunger away.
Blue Lake is an 8.6 mile round trip hike with 2370ft of elevation gain. It’s located in the Mt. Sneffels Wilderness Area. At 14,150, Mt. Sneffels stands as a proud member of the Colorado 14ers!
The hike is a stunning and steady uphill climb.
breathtaking trumps breathlessness
As we headed out on the hike, we hoped our daughter would fall asleep in the kid carrier at some point during the day. At that point in her life she tended to. She loved the bouncing of hiking and logged many naps in a baby backpack or the ergo.
She didn’t.
Now, looking back on that trip and both our struggles and successes camping with a baby all I remember is that it was worth it. Isn’t that how hiking trips often go? Despite tears or frustrations, the beauty trumps and overshadows everything!
As we were hiking to the lake, I remember telling Marc that we would have a quick lunch on the shoreline and then head back. He’s learned not to listen to my ramblings when I’m in the pain zone of a hike. I ate my words as well as my lunch as soon as we arrived and I saw the bright blue lake surrounded in countless wildflowers.
So instead of immediately hiking back, we headed for a lap around the lake. We hiked through countless wildflowers, paused to soak it in, and even to take a few photos (if you can imagine us doing that!)
