Southwest Road Trip Part 2 – Chaco Canyon New Mexico

Last week we shared a little about our adventures in Sedona, the next stop on our road trip was Chaco Canyon, New Mexico. The official name is Chaco Culture National Historic Park. This place is no joke, even getting there you wonder if you took a wrong turn back in time. The dirt roads make the going slow but the views are phenomenal and the destination well worth it. We love being able to see for miles, we love the clouds, and we love a good mesa! The ancestral pueblos (commonly referred to as ruins) were absolutely amazing. I love the idea of not calling them ruins out of respect for the place and the people. It definitely alters my approach and thought process. It’s breath-taking to walk through the buildings and imagine the people that lived there, to see the construction and read about the history. Seeing the great houses exceeded our expectations as they were so expansive and so well preserved. The density of pueblos in the area tells a rich story and caused us to yearn to know more.

We highly recommend a trip to Chaco. The lack of services, cell reception, and amenities encouraged us to be present in our surroundings. There is so much to be seen, so much to explore, and so much that remains undiscovered or at least undisturbed and hidden under layers of sand and earth. It ignited our curiosity and sparked our imaginations as we had deep conversations that went something like this:

  • Me: “Wow!”
  • Marc: “Come look at this.”
  • Me: “Can you imagine.”
  • Marc: ” Let’s go over there.”

I know, I know, riveting. Let’s get to the pictures!
