Adventurous Destination Wedding Photography: Top 5 places we think you should get married… and take us with you!

As our own 5th wedding anniversary approaches and we dream of planning a vacation to celebrate, we can’t help but daydream of celebrating love in some of our favorite places. Today’s blog post is about some of the places we think you should get married. It’s our thoughts on the best locations for an adventurous destination wedding and, bonus point, you don’t even need to leave the US. Be sure to read more about Bergreen weddings if you’re interested in destination wedding photography!

Let’s start of with some criteria so that you know how we are selecting the locations.

Beauty:

As wedding photographers and nature lovers, we believe that the setting of a wedding has the power to enhance the experience both in the moment and for years to come.

Experience:

Once you have the setting for your story, the next step is planning action and adventure. These days weddings are often more than just saying “I Do” and tearing it up on the dance floor, though those are both very important things. With families scattered across the country, sometimes picking a fun place to get together and make memories turns your adventure wedding into an experience. Perhaps you like hiking, beaching, or site seeing.

Access:

This criterion is a little bit of a balancing act because by nature (pun intended) some of our favorite places to go are a little bit hard to get to. However, we do have to consider getting there.

Services: Depending on what you are planning, it can be hard to have a wedding without wedding vendors or reception and ceremony venues so access to vendors is a factor.

Let us know what you think of these adventurous destination wedding locations!

5. Sequoia National Park, California

I have to start with an obvious one since we’ve been shooting a lot of weddings in Sequoia lately. For us, it ranks high in beauty because it has breathtaking Giant Sequoia Trees, fairytale-like meadows, and stunning views. The experience of hiking through the Sequoias is indescribable and there’s a lot to see and do both close to and far from the road. Access can be tricky because the closest airport is Fresno which isn’t always the most cost-effective airport to fly in to. The National Park itself has a variety of ceremony sites but limited options for your reception. However, close by towns offer access to other venues and services.

Access, while not quick, is definitely one of the best parts of the experience. Once you get yourself to Seattle, taking the ferry or float plane to San Juan Island is both breathtaking and memorable. It’s the first leg of a journey to a place that washes your worries away. Enjoy driftwood covered beaches with views towards far-off places, cute little town with lots of bed and breakfast type places to stay, docks to walk with gorgeous reflections of the light bouncing off the water.

3. Estes Park, Colorado

We absolutely love the Rocky Mountains and their relatively close proximity to Denver and the Denver International Airport. Traffic can be rough and so can the altitude especially for people coming from sea-level, but Estes Park is a Rocky Mountain location that doesn’t require you battle the drive up the increasingly crowded I-70. The beautiful venues in or near Estes Park are plentiful and so are the scenic locations to explore. We’ll be bringing you more info on weddings here soon so stay tuned.

2. Zion NP

We’re looking forward to an upcoming wedding in Zion National Park, it’s a National Park that we love to visit and can’t wait to work. Zion is a photographers dream because there are unlimited stunning views and features. The experience is The entire Southwest has a special place in our hearts. We have a hard time speaking to access because to us it’s worth the drive whether we’re coming from Colorado or California. There are so many beautiful places in the vicinity to turn your wedding into a vacation.

1. Culebra

And now we come to perhaps our favorite place and the inspiration for this article. We both honeymooned and celebrated our first anniversary on this small island off the coast of Puerto Rico. For us, it was the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure. Culebra has some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere untouched by the crowds of tourism. The coral and sea-life is vibrant, the water is warm, and the people are fantastic. This isn’t your resort style Caribbean vacation, instead the simple and small town feel tempts you to make it your home.
